SEMO Food Bank, Redhawks football team up for fourth year of Sack Hunger Campaign
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri Food Bank and Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Athletics are partnering for the fourth consecutive year to Sack Hunger during the 2025 football season.
The initiative converts defensive plays into meals for families facing hunger across the region. For every sack by the Redhawks defense, Coalter Insurance, First Midwest Bank, Midwest Sterilization Corp. and Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will each donate $100 to the food bank, providing food for 1,600 meals.
In the 2024 season, the Redhawks recorded 30 sacks, raising $15,000 to combat hunger in southeast Missouri. Every dollar donated provides food for four meals to those in need.
SEMO Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations Nate Saverino praised the partnership, saying it’s a “win-win” for the community and sponsors. Southeast Missouri Food Bank President and CEO Joey Keys echoed this sentiment, highlighting the campaign’s impact on families struggling with hunger.
The food bank will host a Sack Hunger tailgate on Sept. 6, before SEMO’s home opener against North Alabama. Fans can also support the cause by purchasing game tickets through a dedicated link, with $5.73 from each ticket benefiting the food bank.
