CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)— Southeast Missouri State University’s football team will once again team up with the SEMO Food Bank this fall for the “Sack Hunger” fundraiser, turning game changing defensive sacks into donations that help fight food insecurity in the region.

In 2024, the Redhawks recorded 30 QB sacks, generating $15,000 for the food bank through corporate sponsors. For every sack the Redhawks defense tallies, each sponsor donates $100.

“Partnering with football, baseball and basketball has been a great opportunity to raise awareness for food insecurity and also do fundraising as well,” said Clay Scermann, chief development officer for SEMO Food Bank. “With Sack Hunger specifically, every sack that’s tallied by the Redhawks defense results in a charitable donation from the corporate sponsors of the program.”

The funds support the food bank’s mission of ending hunger in southeast Missouri. The organization works with more than 140 agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. It also operates 300 mobile food pantries each year.

“Food insecurity in southeast Missouri sits around 18%, which is higher than the national average,” Scermann said. “There’s a continual need to raise funds to buy food for our food insecure neighbors, and that doesn’t happen without the support of partners like SEMO Athletics and our corporate sponsors.”

The Redhawks home opener for their 2025 season kicks off on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. in Cape Girardeau.
