MT. VERNON, Ill., (KBSI) — A 22-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been charged after a shooting and vehicle crash Sunday morning, police said.

Officers responded about 11:24 a.m. to the area of South 34th Street and Peach Avenue for reports of gunfire. Police said they found a vehicle involved in a crash and evidence of a shooting.

A short time later, another vehicle connected to the incident was located in the 600 block of Strawberry Street with two occupants, authorities said. One victim refused medical treatment, while the other was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mt. Vernon police detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s apartment and later located him in Centralia. He was transported back to Mt. Vernon for questioning. Police said the incident was targeted and not a random act of gun violence.

Amil Ganaway, 22, of Mt. Vernon, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID status. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
