Cape Girardeau police remind drivers to stay safe on the road

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.(KBSI) — Following a couple of recent fatal crashes, Cape Girardeau police are reminding drivers to be cautious and alert behind the wheel.

“Pay attention when you’re driving down the roadways,” Officer Bobby Newton said. “Don’t be distracted by cell phones or any other device. Pay attention to the crosswalks in the school zone. Slow down in those areas, especially during school hours, and just be vigilant and observant when you’re driving.”

Newton encouraged drivers to contact authorities right away if they witness or are involved in a crash. If possible, he said, move vehicles out of the roadway to keep traffic flowing.

“With school being back in session, we see a lot more traffic in the mornings and afternoons,” Newton said. “Make sure you slow down in those school zone areas. Allow yourself a little extra time to get to places.”

Police also talked about the importance of wearing seatbelts, keeping insurance and licenses up to date, and knowing how to respond if pulled over.

“If you are stopped by an officer, make sure that you find an area that’s safe for you to pull over,” Newton said. “Pull as far to the right of the roadway as possible, have your documentation ready, and listen to what the officer tells you. We’ll get you on your way as soon as possible.”
