Carbondale seeks public input for five-year Capital Improvement Plan

FOX23 News at 9 p.m.

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is inviting residents to share their ideas and suggestions for future projects and community improvements.

Each fall, city officials collect input from community members to help shape the Five-Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which serves as a roadmap for major infrastructure projects. The CIP outlines planned construction projects such as streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, traffic signals, drainage systems, public buildings, parking lots, sanitary sewers, water mains, and wastewater treatment improvements.

Maintenance-related concerns — such as potholes, street resurfacing, traffic signals, signs, tree trimming, and ditch maintenance — are not part of the CIP. Those issues can be reported directly to the Public Works Department by calling the Maintenance and Environmental Services Office at 618-457-3275 or by using the SeeClickFix app.

The City’s Engineering Division will review all project suggestions and make recommendations for City Council consideration in November. Council members will determine which projects to include in the Fiscal Year 2027 CIP. City staff will then prioritize and match approved projects with available funding during the budget process in January. A draft of the Five-Year CIP will be presented to the City Council in early spring.

Residents who wish to propose a project may submit suggestions online at Carbondale, IL | Official Website.

The submission deadline is Friday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m.

For more information, contact the Administrative Assistant of the Public Works Department at 618-457-3270. Media inquiries may be directed to the City of Carbondale’s Public Relations Officer at 618-713-0711.

Carbondale describes itself as a community that “embraces the great outdoors as readily as urban sophistication,” encouraging residents and visitors alike to “express yourself and be yourself, in all ways.”
