MARION, Ill., (KBSI) — A traffic stop early Nov. 14 in Marion led to the arrest of a man on drug charges after a Williamson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics, authorities said.

Deputies conducted the stop at 12:24 a.m. near Carbon Street and Illinois Route 13. The driver, identified as Angelica L. Bruce, was advised of the reason for the stop. While deputies were completing their duties, a sheriff’s office K-9 unit arrived and conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle.

K-9 Roxy alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics, giving deputies probable cause to search the vehicle. Deputies located a black backpack that a passenger, Travis J. Webb, said belonged to him. Inside the backpack, deputies found a plastic bag containing residue consistent with methamphetamine.

A further search of Webb found four glass smoking devices and a plastic bag containing methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said.

A female law enforcement officer was called to the scene to conduct searches of Bruce and another female passenger. No contraband was found, and both were released. Bruce was issued a written warning for disobeying a traffic control device.

Webb was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Methamphetamine (Class 3 felony; 720 ILCS 646/60)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Class A misdemeanor; 720 ILCS 600/3.5)

He was transported to the Williamson County Jail.

The sheriff’s office thanked the Marion Police Department and Williamson County State’s Attorney Ted Hampson for their assistance.
