CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Carbondale police are investigating an early-morning shooting in the 500 block of South Graham Avenue that left a 17-year-old suspect wounded.
Officers responded around 2:50 a.m. on Nov. 21 after a 911 caller reported being attacked inside their home by a known acquaintance armed with a firearm. According to police, the suspect struck the victim with the gun. The victim then fired their own weapon in self-defense, hitting the 17-year-old twice.
The juvenile suspect was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and later transferred to an out-of-state hospital, where police say they are in stable condition. The victim had minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.
A second juvenile involved in the initial battery was arrested. Police say the youth is charged with armed robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, mob action and battery. That juvenile was not injured and will be transported to the Jackson County Courthouse for a detention hearing.
Because of Illinois juvenile laws, the names of both suspects will not be released.
A Civic Ready alert was issued to notify residents of police activity in the area. The investigation remains active.
