Carbondale to offer limited e-scooter service through winter months

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Carbondale’s micromobility program will continue operating through the winter this year, offering residents limited access to e-scooters during months when the service has previously paused.
Since the program launched in 2022 through a partnership with e-scooter company Veo, service has traditionally shut down from mid-December through mid-March because of decreased ridership and reduced battery performance in cold temperatures. City officials and Veo said the program fills an important gap in Carbondale’s transportation network, prompting the decision to keep a smaller fleet available during the winter months.
Beginning this season, a limited number of e-scooters will remain in service. Riders can use the VeoRide app to locate available scooters and receive updates on temporary closures during extreme cold or severe weather.
“Transportation needs don’t stop when winter arrives — especially for the 45% of Veo riders in Carbondale who don’t own or have access to a car,” said Jeff Hoover, Veo’s director of government partnerships. “With year-round service, Veo will better support Carbondale’s transportation goals and the daily needs of residents.”
City officials and Veo encourage riders to take extra precautions when riding in winter conditions, including dressing in layers, wearing sturdy footwear with good traction, using a helmet, and riding at reduced speeds.
