Herrin school district responds to rescission of federal community schools grant

HERRIN, Ill., (KBSI) — Herrin Community Unit School District No. 4 has been notified that federal funding through the Full-Service Community Schools grant will be rescinded effective Dec. 31, ending the program earlier than originally planned.
The grant was initially awarded as a five-year initiative. Herrin CUSD #4 is currently in its second year of the program, which district officials say has played a key role in supporting students, families and staff.
According to the district, grant funding has been used to expand student opportunities through clubs, organizations and career pathways programs; provide supplies and activities aimed at strengthening school-family connections; and fund outreach worker positions. The grant also supported additional initiatives designed to build a stronger, more connected school community.
“Herrin CUSD #4 was proud to be one of the original districts to write and advocate for this grant, helping make the Full-Service Community Schools program available to districts across Illinois,” Superintendent Nathaniel L. Wilson said. “The impact has been far-reaching, not just for our students and families, but for schools throughout southern Illinois.”
Since the program’s introduction in Illinois, more than 15 school districts in the region have benefited from the grant, according to Herrin officials. The rescission has already resulted in service reductions in neighboring districts, including the cancellation of some after-school tutoring programs.
“This funding directly supports students who need it most,” Wilson said. “Losing the FSCS grant means fewer resources, fewer supports and fewer opportunities for students and families across our region.”
Herrin CUSD #4 is encouraging staff, families and community members to advocate for reinstatement of the grant. District officials said community members may contact U.S. Rep. Mike Bost’s office to voice support. Additional information about the grant and its impact is available at FSCS | Herrin CUSD #4.
Herrin Community Unit School District No. 4 serves about 2,300 students across five facilities, from prekindergarten through 12th grade. The district said it remains committed to providing high-quality education through strong connections among students, families and staff.
