PORTAGEVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) – The Portageville School District Board of Education has approved a transition to a four-day instructional week beginning in the 2026–27 school year.

The board reached the decision after extensive discussion and review of survey data, educational trends and challenges facing school districts. Board members said the change was made with a focus on supporting students, educators and staff.

The board also considered staff recruitment and retention, noting that maintaining experienced educators and attracting new teachers contributes to instructional quality, staff stability and a positive learning environment for students.

District officials acknowledged the change may raise questions for families and staff. Additional details, including academic calendars, daily schedules, instructional expectations and student support services, will be shared as plans are finalized.

The board said it will continue to monitor the impact of the four-day school week and remains committed to making decisions that best serve students, staff and the Portageville community.
