Cape Girardeau firefighters contain blaze at unoccupied home

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) – The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 11:40 p.m. Jan. 21, 2026, at 256 S. Benton St.
Firefighters arrived to find fire on the second floor of the unoccupied home, with flames extending into the roof area. Crews established command and began fire suppression operations while conducting a primary search of the structure, confirming no occupants were inside.
The fire was brought under control about one hour after crews arrived. Damage was primarily confined to the second-floor walls and roof area.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately four hours to conduct overhaul operations and ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
