Carbondale prepares emergency snow routes, shelters ahead of winter storm

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — As the National Weather Service forecasts potentially hazardous winter weather this weekend, the City of Carbondale said it is preparing emergency snow routes, public safety operations and shelter resources to protect residents and maintain essential services.
City officials said departments are coordinating staffing, operations and communications, and crews have begun pretreating city streets. Emergency snow routes will be prioritized for snow and ice removal, along with roads that pose higher risks such as bridges, curves and hills. Residential streets will be addressed after emergency routes are cleared.
If a winter emergency is declared, parking will be prohibited on streets designated as emergency snow routes. A snow emergency is automatically in effect when snow and ice accumulation exceeds 2 inches. Vehicles parked on emergency snow routes during a snow emergency may be towed at the owner’s expense. Residents are encouraged to move vehicles to driveways, garages or side streets during inclement weather.
Public Works officials noted refuse and recycling schedules may be delayed if conditions are unsafe. Residents with questions about emergency snow routes can contact the Maintenance and Environmental Services Department at 618-457-3275.
City officials also reminded property owners that Carbondale code requires snow, sleet and ice removal from sidewalks adjoining their properties. A cleared path at least 30 inches wide must be provided within 48 hours after snowfall ends. If removal could damage sidewalks, abrasive materials should be applied.
Several shelters and resource centers will be available during winter weather, including the Good Samaritan House at 701 S. Marion St., which operates 24 hours a day under cold-weather protocols, and the Carbondale Warming Center at 608 E. College St., open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday through Monday. Take Action Today, at 809 W. Main St., offers daytime services including showers, laundry and referrals.
The City of Carbondale Fire Department and Carbondale Police Department urged residents to avoid travel during winter storms unless absolutely necessary and to follow winter safety guidelines related to home heating, driving, pets and cold exposure.
Emergency services will remain operational during the storm. Residents should dial 911 in emergencies, report water or sewer breaks at 618-529-1731, and contact their utility provider in the event of a power outage.
