State insurance officials advise Missourians on coverage after winter storms

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance is offering guidance to residents affected by winter weather across the state and reminding consumers to review their insurance coverage as recovery efforts begin.
The department encourages Missourians with questions or concerns about insurance policies to contact DCI’s Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov.
“Insurance is not always top of mind when preparing for winter storms, but it is a vital part of any emergency plan and the recovery process,” DCI Director Angela Nelson said. “If you are dealing with damage, uncertainty about coverage, or difficulty getting answers, we encourage you to contact us.”
DCI advises consumers to document damage as soon as it is safe to do so, take photos before making temporary repairs, keep receipts for emergency fixes and contact their insurance company promptly to begin the claims process. Common winter-related losses include frozen pipes, roof damage, power outages and vehicle damage.
Most homeowners insurance policies cover repairs to frozen pipes and related damage, as well as damage caused by the weight of ice, sleet or snow. Coverage may be limited if a property is vacant or under construction unless reasonable steps were taken to maintain heat or drain water systems.
Many homeowners policies also include coverage for food spoilage following power outages, though coverage limits and availability vary by insurer and may require an optional endorsement.
Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers vehicle damage caused by ice, including falling ice or tree limbs. Coverage for docks, boat lifts and other waterfront structures depends on how those items are insured and may require separate policies or endorsements.
Nelson also encouraged residents to take preventive measures to reduce future risks, including practicing winter fire safety, protecting pipes from freezing, maintaining trees and gutters, ensuring proper home insulation, and preparing vehicles for winter travel.
For additional winter safety information, residents are encouraged to follow guidance from the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
