JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Gas prices in Missouri have increased slightly ahead of the holiday weekend but remain below levels seen a year ago, according to AAA Missouri.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $2.53, up three cents from last week and 32 cents lower than the same time last year.

Among Missouri’s major metropolitan areas, drivers in St. Louis are paying the highest average price at $2.69 per gallon, while drivers in Joplin are paying the lowest at $2.34.

The national average stands at $2.94 per gallon, five cents higher than last week and 21 cents lower than a year ago, according to AAA.

AAA officials said prices are trending upward as warmer weather and a three-day weekend increase fuel demand. Prices could continue to rise in the coming weeks as refineries begin transitioning to summer-blend gasoline.

“Gas prices are moving higher across Missouri as warmer temperatures and a holiday weekend put more drivers on the road,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said in a statement. “While prices are still lower than they were this time last year, seasonal factors — including increased demand and the upcoming transition to summer-blend gasoline — could keep upward pressure on pump prices in the weeks ahead.”

AAA also reminds motorists they can use the organization’s mobile app to find current gas prices, map routes and request roadside assistance.
