SCOTT COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a new lead in the 1979 disappearance of Cheryl Scherer.
Scherer was reported missing April 17, 1979. Over the past year, investigators received information regarding a lead that authorities believe may not have been fully examined at the time. After reviewing the new information and historical case details, investigators identified a possible burial site near County Road 305, also known as Bell’s Crossing, near Scott City.
In 2025, two cadaver dog teams searched the area. A total of five dogs were deployed, and officials said each independently alerted to the same specific location, indicating the possible presence of human remains.
Based on the consistent alerts, investigators established probable cause to excavate the site. Authorities began excavation efforts Friday using heavy machinery.
The sheriff’s office is working in coordination with Jennifer Bengtson, a forensic anthropologist and professor at Southeast Missouri State University, and her team.
Sheriff Derick Wheetley said investigators are hopeful the effort could provide answers for the Scherer family but cautioned that any remains discovered may not be connected to the case.
Officials said the excavation is ongoing and no confirmation has been made regarding the discovery or identification of remains.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area of County Road 305 near the railroad tracks in Scott City. The roadway between the two sections of tracks may be temporarily closed if traffic increases to ensure safety.
