Scott County deputies dig at possible burial site in decades-old Cheryl Scherer disappearance

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Scott County Sheriff’s Office continues excavation efforts in connection with the 1979 disappearance of Cheryl Scherer.
Investigators remain on scene at a site near County Road 305, also known as Bell’s Crossing, near Scott City, where a possible burial location was identified following renewed investigation into the decades-old case.
Over the past year, authorities reviewed new information along with historical case details. In 2025, two cadaver dog teams deployed five dogs to search the area. Officials said all five dogs independently alerted to the same specific location, indicating the possible presence of human remains.
Based on those consistent alerts, investigators established probable cause to excavate the site. Excavation began using heavy machinery, and authorities are working alongside Jennifer Bengtson, a forensic anthropologist and professor at Southeast Missouri State University, and her team.
As of Friday afternoon, personnel continued carefully sifting through soil at the identified location. Authorities described the process as methodical and time-consuming to ensure nothing is overlooked. Investigators are expected to remain on scene for the remainder of the day.
Sheriff Derick Wheetley said the department understands the community’s interest in the case and appreciates continued patience and support while the investigation proceeds.
Officials said they anticipate providing another update around 5 p.m. and again asked the public to avoid the area to allow investigators to work safely and without interruption.
Authorities cautioned that no confirmation has been made regarding the discovery or identification of remains, and the investigation remains ongoing.
