ZEIGLER, Ill. (KBSI) — A condemned building collapsed late Sunday morning in Zeigler after strong winds blew out parts of the structure, according to the Zeigler Fire Department.

Fire Chief Ryan M. Buckingham said crews were dispatched at 11:26 a.m. after reports that a building had collapsed near Zeigler Circle at the intersection of South Main Street and Circle Street in downtown Zeigler.

Officials say strong winds pushed in the north and west walls of the building, causing the structure to give way. The building had been condemned for some time before the collapse.

No injuries were reported.

The collapse also brought down electrical lines in the area. Fire officials initially reported the top of a nearby power pole had snapped, leaving lines energized.

According to a statement from the City of Zeigler Fire Department, Ameren Illinois responded and later secured power to the affected area, eliminating the immediate electrical hazard.

Emergency responders secured the scene and established a safety perimeter while crews worked to address debris and utility hazards.

Two fire engines responded to the collapse. Crews from the City of Zeigler Street Department and Six Mile Township are also assisting with debris removal and hazard mitigation.

Authorities say the intersection of South Main Street and the Circle remains closed to traffic while crews continue cleanup efforts. Officials say work to remove debris and stabilize the area could continue for several days.

Officials also say no surrounding properties were damaged by the collapse.

The Zeigler Fire Department is asking the public to avoid the area and respect barricades while crews continue working.
