CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Central High School senior has earned an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, one of the nation’s most selective military service academies.
Bruce Miller, a senior at Cape Central High School, will attend the academy in Annapolis, Maryland, after completing a rigorous application process that included academic evaluations, leadership qualifications, physical fitness assessments and a nomination.
Miller said he first became interested in attending a service academy during the fall of his junior year.
“As a college football fan, I noticed Army and Navy having really good starts to their seasons, which really got me thinking about service academies,” Miller said. “I asked my dad about his friend who went to the Air Force Academy, and after doing some research I became particularly interested in the Naval Academy.”
Miller later spoke with a family friend who graduated from the academy, which further solidified his interest.
Receiving the appointment, he said, was both validating and humbling.
“I felt validation for all the work I put into the application, but I was also extremely grateful for the people who helped me along the way — my parents, coaches and teachers,” Miller said.
The Naval Academy application process is known for being highly competitive and detailed. Miller said the challenge was managing the many requirements involved.
“With such a thorough process, there are many steps, including the medical review and other detailed requirements, that can slow things down,” he said.
Miller credits his experience at Cape Central — including challenging coursework, athletics and extracurricular activities — with helping him prepare for the academy.
“The rigor of the classes I’ve taken, and the work required to succeed in them taught me a lot about how to handle challenging environments,” Miller said. “The clubs and sports at Central also allowed me to meet many different people and develop leadership skills that will be important in a future military career.”
He encourages younger students interested in service academies to challenge themselves academically and get involved in leadership opportunities.
“To get into a place like a service academy, you need to take full advantage of educational and leadership opportunities throughout your school career,” Miller said.
At the academy, Miller said he plans to explore the different service paths available before deciding on a specific career in the Navy or Marine Corps.
“One of the things that drew me to the Naval Academy was the variety of career opportunities available after graduation,” he said.
Miller said he is especially looking forward to the personal growth and challenge that comes with attending the academy.
“I’m excited to become the best version of myself and to be around peers who push and motivate me every day,” he said. “I’m also proud to represent my state, my community and my school on a national stage.”
