Jackson officials warn yard waste in streets can cause flooding, safety risks

JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) — City officials in Jackson are reminding residents and lawn care providers not to place yard waste in streets or storm drains, warning the practice can lead to flooding and safety hazards.

The city said blowing or sweeping grass clippings, leaves or debris into roadways is a violation of city code and can block storm drains, causing water to back up into streets and nearby properties.

Officials also noted yard waste on roadways can reduce traction for drivers and increase the risk of accidents, while runoff can negatively impact local water quality.

Residents are encouraged to keep yard waste out of streets, ensure lawn care providers follow city regulations and dispose of debris properly.

The city offers several disposal options, including at-home composting, free curbside pickup during the first and third full weeks of each month and drop-off at the city recycling center for residents.

Violations may result in misdemeanor citations under city code.

Residents can report clogged drains or flooding to the Public Works Department and illegal dumping to the Jackson Police Department.
