ZEIGLER, Ill., (KBSI) — A structure fire damaged a home, garage and camper Tuesday morning in Zeigler, fueled by high winds that also sparked multiple spot fires nearby.
The Zeigler Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 10:32 a.m. to 111 Walnut St., where they found a fully involved garage fire that had spread to a nearby camper and residence.
Strong winds contributed to several spot fires within about a one-block radius, prompting additional crews to respond and contain the flames.
Officials said a MABAS Division 68 Box Alarm was requested and later upgraded to a second alarm to bring in additional resources.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and limit damage to surrounding homes, though some minor exposure damage was reported.
One firefighter was injured by broken glass during suppression efforts and was taken to Herrin Hospital. Officials said the firefighter has since been treated and released.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.
