Hundreds already registered for first Autism Color Walk & Roll in Southeast Missouri

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) — A Southeast Missouri autism organization is seeing an overwhelming response to its first-ever community walk — before it even begins.

Autism Awareness of Southeast Missouri, a volunteer-based organization founded in 2016, is hosting its first Autism Color Walk and Roll with support from community partners Armstrong Outdoors and Westview Masonic Lodge.

The organization focuses on helping families navigate life after an autism diagnosis by connecting them with resources and support.

“We’re not a service provider,” said Ashley Showalter, president of Autism Awareness of Southeast Missouri. “Families get a diagnosis, they don’t know where to go. So that is kind of where we come in, just to help parents understand what to do and let them know this is normal.”

Now, the group is bringing that support into a larger community setting. The first-year event is already drawing far more interest than expected.

“We actually projected 200 to 250 people since it’s our first event,” Showalter said. “But it kind of did get some momentum going, and we’re at almost 450 now.”

For Showalter, the mission is personal. She has a 15-year-old nonverbal son on the autism spectrum and says her own experience has shaped how she supports other families.

“That’s the biggest part about it — just knowing that someone gets it,” she said. “The things that other people may take for granted, that they didn’t have to teach their child — I have to teach mine. It’s not always easy.”

The Autism Color Walk and Roll will take place Sunday, April 26 at Jackson City Park. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a free community portion featuring resource booths, activities and local providers. The one-mile color walk starts at 1 p.m., with participants moving through color stations along the route.

Those interested in participating can still register online or in person on the day of the event. T-shirts for the event are no longer available.

Organizers say the goal is to create a space where families can find support and feel connected.

“It’s a kids community event,” Showalter said. “We’ll have providers, resources and sponsors set up. If you’re beginning your autism journey and didn’t know where to go, we’ll have those resources there.”

Any money raised will stay local, going directly back into programs and future events for Autism Awareness of Southeast Missouri.

In addition to the Color Walk, the organization is also planning its Autism Puzzle Run on October 10, 2026, at Armstrong Outdoors in Jackson. The event will include a bike show, live and silent auctions, a 50/50 drawing and live music. All vehicles are welcome to participate.

Puzzle Run Save The Date

Organizers say both events are part of a broader effort to continue building support and awareness in the region.
