FRANKFORT, Ky. (KBSI) — Gov. Andy Beshear and education leaders are mourning the death of longtime civil rights leader Porter G. “P.G.” Peeples.
Peeples died April 28 at his office at the Urban League of Lexington-Fayette County, where he spent more than five decades advocating for civil rights, education and affordable housing.
In a statement, Beshear called Peeples a “true leader” who led the Lexington Urban League for decades and made a lasting impact across Kentucky.
Fayette County Public Schools officials also praised Peeples’ legacy, noting he spent 57 years with the Urban League, including 55 as CEO, and served as a founding member of the district’s Equity Council Committee.
Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said Peeples was a “steadfast champion” for students and families who pushed the district to improve opportunities and equity.
The district established the P.G. Peeples Equity Champion Award in 2022 to recognize community members who advocate for equitable opportunities for students and families.
Members of the Equity Council Committee described Peeples as a lifelong advocate who worked to support underserved communities and advance educational equity.
Officials extended condolences to Peeples’ family and said his legacy will continue to influence the community for generations.
