Cape County Sheriff’s Office warns individuals of social security related scam

CAPE COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – Cape County Sheriff’s Office is alerting individuals of a Social Security related scam.
According to Cape County Sheriff’s Office a nationwide scam has been seen locally in which individuals falsely claim to be from the Social Security Administration.
Scammers may call, text, email, or message people on social media claiming your Social Security number has been suspended, your benefits are at risk, or that you owe money and must pay immediately to avoid arrest or other consequences.
The sheriff’s office warns these messages are scams posting these tips to social media:
The real Social Security Administration will NOT
• Threaten you with arrest
• Demand immediate payment
• Request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps
• Contact you through social media, demanding personal information or money
The department shares that older family members, friends, and neighbors may be more likely to be targeted by these types of scams.
A quick conversation could help prevent someone from becoming a victim.
If you receive one of these calls or messages Cape County Sheriff’s Office advises you should not send money, do not provide personal information, hang up or ignore the message, contact the Social Security Administration directly using verified contact information.
