Cape Girardeau to host America’s 250th block party June 14

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Cape Girardeau will host a community celebration next month recognizing America’s 250th anniversary during a special Flag Day block party event.

The “America’s 250th Local Block Party” is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 401 Independence St. in Cape Girardeau.

According to organizers, the free public event will feature historical presentations, live performances, displays and community activities centered around American history and patriotism.

Scheduled presentations include “An Update on The American Dream” by Joel Rhodes, “U.S. Black Soldiers Reenactment” by Calvin Osborne and Anthony Jones, “Report from Philadelphia 1776” by Arthur Mattingly and “American Revolutionary War Roots” by Bill Eddleman.

The event will also feature a performance by James Linden Hong & Co., a display of flags by the Sons of the American Revolution, local historic and civic groups, artists, food trucks and merchandise vendors.

The Kellerman Foundation for Historic Preservation is organizing the event with support from the Missouri Humanities Council through the “From Colonies to Cape Girardeau: 250 Years of Independence” project.

Organizers say no pets or firearms will be allowed at the event.
