JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced a partnership with anti-human trafficking organization It’s a Penalty to help combat human trafficking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The initiative is part of an international awareness campaign involving host cities, corporations, nonprofit organizations, governments and sports ambassadors across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Hanaway said major international events can create opportunities for traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals, making prevention and public awareness efforts critical.
The campaign will provide educational videos, public awareness materials, reporting resources and training for frontline workers. Organizers said the effort is designed to help fans, travelers and local communities recognize and report signs of exploitation.
According to campaign organizers, human trafficking affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide, including millions of children.
Sarah de Carvalho, CEO of It’s a Penalty, said the World Cup provides an opportunity to educate millions of people about recognizing and preventing human trafficking.
