Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers of flash flood dangers

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to use caution during heavy rainfall after flash flooding quickly developed across parts of the county Monday.

Officials said rain moved into the area rapidly, causing water to cover some roadways within minutes. While conditions have improved, deputies said the flooding serves as a reminder of how quickly dangerous situations can develop.

According to the sheriff’s office, flooded roads are often deeper and more hazardous than they appear.

Even a small amount of moving water can make a vehicle difficult to control, and hidden obstacles beneath the water can create additional dangers.

The sheriff’s office urges drivers to avoid driving around barricades or road closure signs, slow down during heavy rainfall, allow extra travel time and stay informed about changing weather and road conditions.

If motorists encounter water covering a roadway, officials advise turning around and finding an alternate route.

Deputies emphasized the National Weather Service’s safety message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
