NWS confirms EF-3 tornado in Jefferson County; two killed, five injured

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado that struck Jefferson County on Sunday evening was an EF-3 with peak winds of 140 mph.
According to preliminary survey information, the tornado carved a damage path approximately 14 miles long after touching down shortly after 5 p.m. in the northeastern part of the county.
Officials said two people were killed and five others were injured as the storm moved northeast through the area.
The victims were identified as 83-year-old Delores B. Shelton and 62-year-old Sarita L. Kimble, both of Mount Vernon.
The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency said dispatchers received numerous reports of destroyed homes, downed trees and power lines, and missing persons as the tornado moved through the area.
Local, state and volunteer agencies continue recovery efforts.
Officials are asking the public to avoid the damaged areas unless travel is necessary for an emergency so first responders and utility crews can continue their work safely.
Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. The Red Cross has also opened a reception center at the Rolland Lewis Building, 800 S. 27th St. in Mount Vernon.
Damage assessments and recovery operations remain ongoing.
