CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is preparing to begin the next phase of the Piles Fork Greenway Improvement Project, a trail enhancement effort funded through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.
City officials said Carbondale received grant funding for the project in 2022, and Samron Midwest Contracting was awarded the construction contract in January 2026. Design and planning work has been completed, with demolition of portions of the trail scheduled to begin in August.
According to the city, construction activities near East College Street will require unhoused individuals currently living in the area to relocate before work begins.
City officials said the Carbondale Police Department’s Advocacy Team, along with community partners and service organizations, will continue working with those affected to help secure housing, mental health services, substance use treatment resources and other long-term support options.
The city said staff have provided information directly to many individuals living near the greenway and are coordinating with local organizations to identify available resources and housing opportunities.
Officials said updates regarding the project will continue to be shared with residents in the area as construction approaches.
The Piles Fork Greenway Improvement Project is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance walking and biking infrastructure throughout the community.
