SPRINGFIELD, Mo., (KBSI) – Missouri-based Convoy of Hope is providing disaster relief in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country, killing more than 180 people and injuring at least 900, according to the humanitarian organization.
The Springfield-based nonprofit said its teams are already on the ground distributing emergency supplies, including food, clean water and hot meals from mobile kitchens to people affected by the disaster.
“Images of the devastation in Venezuela are heartbreaking,” Convoy of Hope National Spokesperson Ethan Forhetz said in a statement. “The loss of life is staggering. Convoy of Hope is currently working to deliver much-needed essential relief supplies to survivors.”
According to Convoy of Hope, the earthquakes measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and have caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. The organization said survivors are still being rescued from collapsed buildings as emergency crews continue search-and-rescue operations.
Convoy of Hope said it plans to remain in Venezuela to support recovery efforts as humanitarian needs continue.
