New Kentucky law requires drivers to stop for school buses on most four-lane roads

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) — The Graves County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers about a new Kentucky law that expands when motorists must stop for school buses.

According to the sheriff’s office, changes to KRS 189.370 took effect July 15.

Under the updated law, drivers approaching a stopped school bus with its stop arm extended and warning lights activated must stop, even on a four-lane roadway.

The only exceptions are roads divided by an unpaved median or an elevated barrier, where traffic traveling in the opposite direction is not required to stop.

Sheriff Jon Hayden urged motorists to be aware of the new law as students begin returning to school in the coming weeks and school buses return to area roadways.
