Carbondale police recognize K-9 handlers, promote Citizens Police Academy

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The Carbondale Police Department is recognizing its past and present K-9 handlers for National Police K-9 Day.

The department’s current K-9 unit includes Officers Brett Garden, Tomas Kawasaki and Seth Moorman, along with Sgt. Jeramie Stewart.

As part of the recognition, the department shared a photograph from about 1965 showing Officer Jerry Nellis and police dog King participating in a K-9 demonstration for a first-grade class at Brush School.

Residents interested in learning more about the department’s K-9 unit can apply for the next Citizens Police Academy, which begins Sept. 17. Applications are due Sept. 14.
