1 arrested after Cape Girardeau police vehicle stolen

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A suspect is in custody and faces charges after a police vehicle was stolen on Thursday.

Gregory Ross, 59, of Cape Girardeau faces charges of Class D felony of tampering in the first degree and Class E felony stealing.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of S. Ellis in reference to shots fired on March 23 around 11 p.m.

Due to the seriousness of the incident and the very real potential for violence/loss of life, one of the officers quickly exited his patrol car and approached the scene.

The officer reported that when he left his vehicle he tried to lock his patrol car; however, he is unsure if the door lock engaged.

When the officer returned to his patrol car where it was parked, he saw his patrol car missing.

The officers immediately began searching for the vehicle. It was located about one mile away from the scene.

The vehicle was undamaged, and no equipment was stolen from the vehicle, according to police.

The vehicle belonged to a K-9 officer and K-9 Jango was inside the patrol vehicle at the time. K-9 Jango was found uninjured inside the vehicle when the officers found the vehicle..

Officers collected evidence from the vehicle and are investigating.

Ross is being held on a $10,000 cash only bond.
