2 sentenced for armed robbery in Carbondale

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – Two men who pleaded guilty to charges related to a vehicular hijacking in Carbondale were sentenced on Tuesday.
On May 5, 2023, the Carbondale Police Department responded to reports of an armed robbery near 900 E. Grand Ave in Carbondale.
The victims were approached by two men for a ride home that night and were robbed of personal items including phones, wallets, jewelry, US currency, and their car. The two drove off in the victims’ car, and later abandoned it on a nearby street. The victims walked back to their friend’s house to call for help.
Jamir J. Jordan, 34, of Chicago was sentenced to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a one year period of mandatory supervised release. He pleaded guilty to armed robbery (Class X felony).
Dominique J. Smith, 29, of Carbondale was sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by one year of mandatory supervised release. He pleaded guilty to to aggravated robbery (Class 1 felony) and vehicular hijacking (Class 1 felony).
The Carbondale Police Department conducted the investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Police and the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office.
State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez is responsible for the prosecution of both Jamir Jordan and Dominique Smith. “Violent crimes like this are extremely personal and don’t just claim the immediate victims but have a chilling effect on the entire community,” said Cervantez. “Offenders will be held accountable in Jackson County.”
