Ameren warns customers about rise in fake websites and utility scams

ST. LOUIS (KBSI) — Ameren is warning customers in Illinois and Missouri about an increase in fraudulent websites and fake contact information being used by scammers posing as the utility company.

According to Ameren, scammers are creating fake websites and online listings that resemble the company’s official website, including fraudulent phone numbers and email addresses. Customers searching online for billing information, account assistance or service changes may unknowingly contact scammers instead of legitimate company representatives.

Ameren said scammers often attempt to gain customers’ trust by requesting account information, sending text messages or imitating company services. In many cases, scammers demand immediate payment through cash payment apps.

“Unfortunately, these scammers continue to find new tactics to trick utility customers into providing payments to them or by obtaining their personal information,” Maria Gomez, security supervisor for Ameren, said in a statement. “As new technology and the use of digital products increase, so do opportunities for these thieves to deceive our customers.”

Ameren encourages customers to visit its official website directly or contact the company through official customer service numbers rather than relying on internet search results.

The company also reminded customers that it will never require immediate payment or request payments through prepaid cards or apps such as Zelle, Cash App or Venmo to avoid disconnection of service.

Customers who believe they may have been targeted by a scam are encouraged to contact Ameren immediately and report any financial losses or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
