Authorities investigating after body of man found in Portageville warehouse

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. (KBSI) – Police are investigating after human remains were found in a warehouse in Portageville on Sunday.

The Portageville Police Department notified New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department investigators on Sunday, January 22 about the human remains.

The remains were found in an unused portion of a warehouse in Portageville, according to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department.

Once New Madrid County investigators arrived on scene, Portageville police officers and New Madrid County investigators identified the remains as Butch W. Swofford.

Swofford went missing on November 25, 2020 and was last seen walking near the Portageville Fire Deparment on Baker Avenue in Portageville, according to the sheriff’s department.

No cause or manner of death is being released. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24 at 1:30 p.m.
