BBB warns residents about flood-related scams, damaged vehicles after recent flooding

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Better Business Bureau is warning residents in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois to be on the lookout for scams, fraudulent contractors and flood-damaged vehicles following recent flooding in the region.

According to the BBB, natural disasters often create opportunities for scammers to target homeowners and consumers dealing with property damage and recovery efforts.

The organization is encouraging residents to thoroughly research contractors before hiring them and to be cautious of anyone requesting large upfront payments, using high-pressure sales tactics or offering cash-only deals.

BBB also warned consumers to be careful when purchasing used vehicles, noting that flood damage may not immediately appear on vehicle history reports. Buyers are encouraged to obtain a vehicle history report and have any vehicle independently inspected by a licensed mechanic before making a purchase.

The BBB recommends contacting insurance companies before beginning repair work, obtaining multiple estimates from contractors and ensuring all agreements are documented in writing.

Residents who believe they have encountered a scam are encouraged to report it through BBB Scam Tracker. Consumers can also file complaints with the Better Business Bureau regarding unsatisfactory business practices.
