FRANKFORT, Ky., (KBSI) — Gov. Andy Beshear announced $1.8 million in grant funding for five railway infrastructure projects aimed at improving safety, connectivity and economic development across Kentucky.
The funding comes through the Kentucky Industrial Access and Safety Improvement program, which supports rail-related projects that enhance industrial access and freight transportation.
According to the governor’s office, the projects include upgrades to safety monitoring systems, construction of a new railyard and the rehabilitation and reactivation of thousands of feet of rail track.
“Our railways play a critical role in Kentucky’s economy,” Beshear said in a statement. “These investments will not only make railways safer, but they’ll also help provide opportunities and good-paying jobs for our people.”
One of the funded projects is in Bowling Green, where more than $460,000 will be used to rehabilitate 6,100 feet of rail spur and install new flashing-light signals at the Commonwealth Boulevard crossing.
The grant program requires applicants to provide at least a 50% local match. Projects are evaluated based on factors including rail line improvements, job creation, capital investment, support for rail-served industries and project readiness.
Since taking office, the Beshear administration has awarded approximately $17.3 million through the Kentucky Industrial Access and Safety Improvement program.
