Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office warns of scams

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about different types of scams.

One scam tells people there is a missing child, elderly, or animal.

Other scams adverstise cheap houses for rent. Ask others to share the info, and once it is shared, the scammer will go back and edit the original post changing the photos, links, and details to something else that will help complete their scam. Here are a couple of pointers to help steer you clear of these types of phishing scams.

If you see a post on Facebook Marketplace asking you to share and the comments are turned off, probably a good one to rethink, according to the sheriff’s office.

If it is a lost pet and they do not give you a specific area where it was lost, they just give you the city, probable a good idea to skip, according to the sheriff’s office.

If it is an Amber Alert or Silver Alert and you see it posted on the Marketplace but not on the originating law enforcement agencies page, you might want to rethink sharing it.
