CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is set to receive $2 million in federal funding for improvements to its homeless shelter facility.

The funding, provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, was secured as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, signed into law Feb. 3.

Officials said the money will support the city’s Homeless Center Facility Rehabilitation project, which aims to upgrade amenities and improve accessibility at the shelter.

Tammy Duckworth advocated for the funding through the congressional spending process, citing the need for expanded support to address homelessness in the region.

City officials said they are working with local partners, including the Carbondale Warming Center and Good Samaritan, to determine plans for the project.

The project is expected to enhance services and resources for individuals experiencing homelessness in the Carbondale area.
