JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Google announced a $15 billion investment Wednesday to build infrastructure in New Florence, Missouri, in what state officials described as a historic economic development project.
Gov. Mike Kehoe said the investment in Montgomery County will support job creation, workforce development and community partnerships across the region.
Google said the project will create thousands of construction jobs during the build phase and hundreds of long-term operational positions once the facility opens. The company said each direct data center job is expected to generate nearly nine additional local jobs in industries such as construction, HVAC, maintenance and landscaping.
As part of the project, Google is partnering with the Construction Laborers and Contractors Joint Training Fund of Eastern Missouri to expand training opportunities for construction workers and apprentices. The company also highlighted ongoing workforce development programs in Kansas City focused on skilled trades and STEAM education.
Google also announced a $20 million Energy Impact Fund aimed at helping reduce energy costs for Missouri households in areas surrounding planned data centers in Montgomery, Clay and Platte counties. One of the first recipients will be the Northeast Community Action Corporation, which plans to use funding for home repairs, weatherization upgrades and apprenticeship training.
According to the company, the New Florence data center will use air-cooling technology designed to limit water consumption. Google said it also plans to support water conservation efforts through local irrigation and watershed projects.
State and local leaders said the project is expected to provide long-term economic benefits through tax revenue, infrastructure investment and expanded employment opportunities.
