FRANKFORT, Ky. (KBSI) — Andy Beshear announced Friday that the Kentucky State Police has added a specialized armored “Rook” vehicle to its fleet to improve officer safety during high-risk incidents.
According to the governor’s office, the bulletproof tactical vehicle is designed for situations including hostage incidents, barricaded suspects, riot response and natural disasters. Officials said its compact size allows it to operate in confined areas where traditional armored vehicles may not fit.
The vehicle includes interchangeable attachments, including a hydraulic fork for clearing obstacles and an armored personnel cage for protected approaches during dangerous operations. State officials said the Kentucky State Police Rook is the only one of its kind in Kentucky and one of 108 nationwide.
The vehicle was purchased in December 2025 using asset forfeiture funds seized through criminal investigations, according to the release.
Gov. Beshear said the investment helps improve public safety while protecting law enforcement officers in dangerous situations. KSP officials said the Rook has already been deployed eight times since it was acquired and has helped officers safely serve high-risk warrants and breach barricades.
