SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is making more than $700,000 available to help local governments improve energy efficiency in public buildings.
Illinois EPA Director James Jennings announced Tuesday that $766,600 is available through the Public Buildings Energy Efficiency Program. Municipalities, counties and other units of local government are eligible to apply.
The funding can be used for energy efficiency improvements identified through an assessment or audit conducted within the past five years.
Eligible projects include building insulation, window replacements, lighting upgrades, programmable thermostats, occupancy sensors, heating and cooling system retrofits and high-efficiency appliances.
“This program provides financial resources as well as technical support through Illinois EPA’s Office of Energy,” Jennings said. “This funding will improve energy efficiency and provide cost savings to public buildings in Illinois.”
Individual grants will be capped at $200,000 per recipient.
Funding for the program comes through the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program.
Applications for the Efficient and Resilient Public Building Grant will be accepted through Sept. 30.
