Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Williamson County identified

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – Illinois State Police identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in Williamson County on Dec. 7.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service on Devils Fork Road in rural Carbondale on Dec. 7 at 12:45 p.m.

A sheriff’s deputy encountered 47-year-old Jeremy Fowler of Carbondale who began to approach as he the deputy left his patrol vehicle. While approaching, Fowler had a rifle and continued toward the deputy.

Fowler was ordered to drop the weapon multiple times and failed to comply, according to the sheriff’s office.

After pointing the weapon at the deputy and continuing toward him, the deputy shot his weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fowler was pronounced dead on scene. The deputy was not injured.

“While any loss of life is unfortunate, we are grateful for the professionalism and safety of our Deputy who survived this incident given this unthinkable situation,” said Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich.

This is an ongoing investigation.
