MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — Mississippi County Sheriff Britton Ferrell announced Thursday that he is stepping down after eight years as sheriff.

Ferrell said his resignation is effective Aug. 20.

In a statement, Ferrell cited ongoing health concerns related to atrial fibrillation and changes in his family as reasons for his decision. He said the recent addition of a grandchild also contributed to his desire to spend more time focusing on his health and family.

Ferrell has served the Mississippi County community for 18 years, including eight years as an unpaid reserve, two years as a deputy and eight years as sheriff.

“It has been an honor to serve this community,” Ferrell said.

Ferrell credited employees within the sheriff’s office for improvements in operations, fiscal management and the agency’s public standing during his tenure.

“Many capable people in this office will keep the positive momentum going,” Ferrell said.

Ferrell thanked residents for their support and said it had been a privilege to serve alongside members of the sheriff’s office.
