JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri’s average gas price climbed to $4.16 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel this week, according to AAA Missouri’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average is up 33 cents from last week and $1.34 higher than the same time last year. Missouri drivers are now paying about 47% more at the pump compared to this day in 2025.

Among Missouri metro areas surveyed, drivers in St. Louis are paying the highest average price at $4.31 per gallon, while drivers in Joplin are paying the lowest at $3.91 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline rose to $4.56 per gallon, up 26 cents from last week and $1.38 higher than one year ago.

AAA said Missouri’s statewide average surpassed $4 per gallon this week for the first time since July 2022 and continues to rise.

Officials said elevated crude oil prices remain the primary factor driving higher fuel costs, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. AAA also noted seasonal demand is increasing as warmer weather brings more drivers to the roads ahead of the Memorial Day travel weekend.

“Elevated crude oil prices remain the main driver behind the higher prices Missouri drivers are seeing at the pump,” said Nick Chabarria, spokesperson for AAA Missouri. “Ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to influence the global oil market. At the same time, warmer weather brings more people onto the roads, which typically increases fuel demand this time of year.”

AAA also reminded motorists about its Approved Auto Repair program, which helps drivers locate repair shops that meet standards for training, equipment, cleanliness and customer service.
