PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — The City of Paducah is inviting residents to celebrate Flag Day during a community event scheduled for June 15 at Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza.
The celebration will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at the plaza, located at 301 S. Fifth St., and will feature a flag-raising ceremony, patriotic music, guest speakers, educational displays and children’s activities.
McCracken County Commissioner Richard Abraham is scheduled to perform the national anthem. Remarks will be delivered by Paducah Mayor George Bray and McCracken County Judge-Executive Craig Clymer.
“Flag Day reminds us of the values that unite us as Americans and the pride we share in our nation’s history,” Bray said in a statement.
The event will be held near the flagpole on the Washington Street side of the park. Washington Street between Fifth and Sixth streets will be closed during the celebration.
Organizers said the event will be held rain or shine unless severe weather is present.
The celebration is being coordinated by the Paducah Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, U.S. Coast Guard, McCracken County Public Library and the City of Paducah Police and Fire departments.
Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress approved the design of the nation’s flag. President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as National Flag Day in 1916.
