POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — A Poplar Bluff High School junior has earned an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., after winning an essay contest sponsored by Ozark Border Electric Cooperative.
Addison Hutson was selected April 1 and will join more than 100 Missouri students for the 63rd annual Missouri Youth Tour, scheduled for June 14-20.
The weeklong trip includes visits to historic landmarks and programs focused on leadership, civic engagement and the role of electric cooperatives.
Hutson’s winning essay, about 1,000 words, focused on her personal journey of rediscovering her passion for soccer after experiencing a significant loss.
In the essay, Hutson described how the sport became both a source of joy and, at times, a reminder of personal challenges, leading her to step away temporarily before returning with renewed determination.
She said the experience taught her the importance of healing, resilience and perseverance.
In addition to soccer, Hutson participates in the school’s swim team, student council, Beta Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She plans to attend Missouri State University after graduation to study business.
During the trip, student delegates will tour landmarks including the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery and several national monuments, and will meet with members of Congress alongside students from across the country.
