PORCH Initiative donates new shoes to Blanchard Elementary

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Some Blanchard Elementary students in Cape Girardeau received new shoes thanks to a donation from the PORCH Initiative.

PORCH stands for People Organized to Revitalize Community Healing. The organization is working to use the Purpose-Built Community model to “fix big problems facing South Cape and build a future of opportunity for all of its residents…”

Tameka Randle, executive director of the PORCH Initiative, presented a check for $1,500 to Cape Public Schools and several boxes of new shoes for students.

“We are excited, great energy, especially right before the holidays,” said Randle.

She shares that it is always their intention to be active in the community.

The shoes were donated during basketball season and Coach Tim Schmidtt says shoes are most important for this sport.

“With footwear it’s very important in basketball,” said Coach Schmidtt. “It’s very cutting, a lot of forward movements as well.”

The organization is working to use the purpose-built community model to fix big problems facing south Cape and build a future of opportunity for all its residents.

District Athletic Director for Cape Public Schools Tyson Moyers says this is the first step to achieving success and investing in students.

“The school district has started this program, that basically we help our students, get into the Cape Parks and Rec league,” said Moyers. “We recruit coaches. We use district facilities for these kids to be able to participate. That’s what we want. We know that athletics is a driver of success. We know that more kids are involved they’re more likely to come to school, they’re more likely to behave well in school, they’re more likely to do well in school.”
