CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — With dangerous heat expected across southeast Missouri during the Fourth of July holiday week, the American Red Cross is urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The organization encourages people to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, stay cool by spending time in air-conditioned buildings and stay connected by checking on family members, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” said Micheal Sullivan, executive director of the American Red Cross of Southeast Missouri. “We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes.”

The Red Cross recommends drinking about one cup of water every 20 minutes while working or exercising outdoors and avoiding sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Officials also advise wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and taking frequent breaks in the shade.

Residents without air conditioning are encouraged to seek relief at locations such as libraries, shopping malls or community cooling centers. The Red Cross also reminds people never to leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles and to ensure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

Officials say it is important to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion require immediate cooling and hydration, while heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency that requires calling 911.

The Red Cross also encourages residents to prepare for possible power outages by keeping food, water, medications and ice available and knowing where to find air-conditioned shelter if electricity is lost.

The organization offers free First Aid and Emergency mobile apps that provide heat safety information and real-time weather alerts.
