JONESBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — The Union County Sheriff’s Office will increase traffic enforcement efforts ahead of the Independence Day holiday, with a focus on impaired driving and seat belt violations.
The campaign will run from June 19 through July 6 and is intended to cover three summer weekends surrounding the Fourth of July holiday.
“We’re asking all residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” Sheriff David Wilkins said. “If you’re driving, don’t drink or use drugs.”
The sheriff’s office will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 law enforcement agencies statewide in the enforcement effort.
Officials are encouraging motorists to designate a sober driver, use ride-sharing services or contact a friend or family member for a safe ride home if impaired. Drivers are also urged to report suspected impaired motorists by calling 911 when it is safe to do so.
The sheriff’s office also reminded residents that seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and save lives in a crash.
The campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois.
