More severe storms, flooding possible overnight into Wednesday
Heading into the rest of Tuesday, a severe weather risk remains for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. We have been downgraded to a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for scattered severe storms possible through this timeframe. We’ll be watching for more large hail and damaging winds with these storms late Tuesday.
After an initial round of storms moved through late Tuesday morning into the afternoon, we’ve seen some light to moderate rain continue to fall. That will set us up for potential flooding with more rainfall throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday.
Cape Girardeau and areas east (shaded green below) are under a Flood Watch through Wednesday morning.
Running through the latest model runs, storms look to initiate after 10 p.m. tonight, through our area and east into southern Illinois and western Kentucky. A snapshot of Stormcast below shows what these storms could look like by 1 a.m., when the chance to see these intensify is better. With this activity expected overnight, it’s a good idea to have multiple ways to receive warnings as you think about heading to bed.
Again, primary concern with this second round into Wednesday is large hail and flooding. As these storms begin, some isolated hail events could be approaching 2″+ in diameter. We are on the lower end for a risk of tornadoes with this event.
There is a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall into Wednesday. Numerous spots could see flash flooding through southeast MO, southern IL, western KY, and TN into early Wednesday morning. Amounts could add up to a few to several inches of rain within the area shaded in red, with a train of storms moving over the same areas.
The Skeeter Meter will remain in the “Ugh” category through Thursday, with humidity and the potential for standing water. Heat indices for Wednesday could be climbing to 110°+, with triple-digit indices possible on Thursday, too. We’ll see conditions become more comfortable by Friday.
Storms will be possible again late Wednesday and into Thursday, with more storms possible on Thursday. We are in an active pattern right now, and as it continues, stay with us for the latest developments.
